Wingo app: what it can be, and what to check before you install

A Wingo app can be a file, a store listing or a web shortcut. See how a file is checked before you install it, with a worked example.

Tool · runs in your browserNothing is uploaded

The file stays on your device. It is read by your browser to work out the fingerprint and is never uploaded.

Spaces, colons and capital letters are fine.

Worked example, not your file. A tiny made-up file stands in for an app file here, so you can see what the result looks like. Choose your own file above and this is replaced.

Matcheswhat the checker says about the example file wingo-app-example.apk
64characters in a SHA-256 fingerprint (0–9 and a–f)
51 bytessize of the example file (real app files are millions of bytes)
50 4b 03 04first four bytes in hex: how every Android app file begins

wingo-app-example.apk is 51 bytes here (a real app file is millions of bytes, but the method is the same). The checker works out its fingerprint, and it is the same 64 characters the publisher printed, so the result is Matches.

An app called Wingo can be a listing in your phone’s store, a file sent to you or a web page saved to your home screen, and each is checked differently. For a file, the fingerprint the publisher prints is the check. The worked example below shows a file that passes it, and what a pass does not prove.

In the example, wingo-app-example.apk is 51 bytes long and starts with 50 4b 03 04. It matches the value printed for it, so the result is Matches. That tells you the file was not changed on the way. It does not tell you who the publisher is or what the app does once it runs.

Choose your own file in the box above and the example is replaced by the result for it.

Common questions

What is the Wingo app?

We cannot say what any app with that name does. Wingo is described as a round inside platforms’ game lists, and an app, a file or a web shortcut can all carry the name. Find out who published it and check the file before you install.

What does a matching fingerprint prove?

Only that your file is identical to the one the fingerprint was printed for. It says nothing about who made it, what the app does once it runs, or whether it is the newest version.

What do I do with a file that came without a fingerprint?

Treat it as unchecked. You can work out its fingerprint, but there is nothing to hold it against. Ask the publisher for a SHA-256 value, find another route such as a web page, or leave the file alone.

Where should the publisher’s fingerprint come from?

From a second place, not the page or chat that gave you the file. If one source hands you both, whoever swapped the file could have swapped the number too, and a match shows only that the download arrived whole.

Does the file I choose leave my phone?

No. Your browser reads the file on your own device and works out the fingerprint there. Nothing is sent to this site or anywhere else, and nothing is stored.
