A 3% edge is only an example. Apps differ and some do not state one, so use the figure your own app states. If it does not, type the multiplier it shows after that many safe picks in the last box and the calculator works out the edge that multiplier implies.

On a grid of 25 tiles with 3 mines, you get through 5 safe picks about 49.6% of the time (1 in 2). With a 3% edge, a cash-out at that point pays 1.96× (break-even is 2.02×). Wherever you cash out, the game keeps about 3% of what is staked: ₹300 over 100 rounds at ₹100. By pick 5, a mine is more likely than not to have ended the round.

Practise with pretend money

Press Start, open tiles one at a time, and cash out whenever you like. The mines are placed by random numbers from your browser, using the grid, mines and edge above. There is no money in it, and it is not any app’s game: it shows how rounds tend to run.

Auto-play opens the first tiles each time and cashes out after the number of safe picks set above.

Does it matter which tiles you tap?

Four ways of choosing tiles, tried on the same 2,000 random layouts: always the top rows, always the bottom rows, tiles spread across the grid, and fresh random tiles each round. Run it a few times.

The demo on this page is a practice grid. You choose the size, the mines and your pretend stake, open tiles one by one, and see the multiplier climb with each safe pick. It is built to show how rounds tend to run, not to copy any app’s game.

Cash out after 5 safe picks and you should win about 49.6% of rounds, so over 100 rounds expect close to that share of wins. Auto-play does a hundred rounds at a time, and the balance line shows which way the average pushes.

These are example figures. Replace them with your own app’s grid and edge, and read the result as an average, not a forecast.

Common questions

How many practice rounds tell me anything?

A few hundred. Ten rounds can end almost anywhere, which is the point: short sessions are luck. Over several hundred rounds the share of rounds you win settles close to the maths, and the balance line shows which way the average pushes.

How is the practice grid different from the Mines game in an app?

The practice grid lays mines with random numbers from your browser, uses the grid, mines and edge you set, and pays pretend money. An app has its own rules and its own edge, and we cannot see inside it. The maths of the grid is the same kind of thing in both.

Do I need an account or a download to practise Mines here?

No. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to install. The grid works in your browser, and nothing you do on it is sent anywhere.

How does one round of a Mines-style game work?

A grid hides a chosen number of mines. You open tiles one at a time, and each safe tile raises a multiplier. You may cash out after any safe tile and collect your stake times the multiplier. If you open a mine, the round ends and the stake is gone.

How do I set a limit before I play Mines?

Decide before you start what you can afford to lose, and stop when you reach it. The expected loss in the calculator turns a stake and a number of rounds into a figure, and the daily limit guide on this site shows how to set one.
